about
Armed with Triple J national radio airplay on back-to-back singles ('A Home She Made’, ‘All OK’), support from several playlist heavyweights including Indiemono and backing by some of Australia’s most trusted music publications (Scenestr, Happy Mag, Forte), Sydney singer/songwriter Callan John has been steadily gathering steam throughout 2020 and now returns with his 8th release in as many months.
A rootsy folk-rock mood booster reminiscent of Jack Johnson or Jason Mraz at their upbeat best, ‘Fine’ was initially written in late 2011 but Callan forgot the lyrics and lost the book he wrote them in.
So when he returned to his singer/songwriter roots 2018 after a 3 year detour into the world of electronic music, Callan decided to re-write the song around the few remaining fragments of the original version he could recall: the chords, chorus and one line from the last verse he just couldn’t let go of.
In this final version of ‘Fine’, Callan offers up a retrospective look at the moment he met “the one”, the moment he found out she was going to marry someone else, and optimistic contemplation about what the future holds for both of them.
Interestingly, the song’s feel-good, sing-a-long vibe juxtaposes the somber subject matter described by Callan’s clever lyrical wordplay; all of which is masterfully stitched together by legendary co-producer Tim Carr (Matt Corby - ‘Brother’).
With Tim's wealth of expertise is woven through the very fabric of this little indie gem, Callan set ‘Fine’ free on Friday 13th November 2020 and it is the 8th single from his 9-track mixtape ‘L89’ (Latey Nine).

LYRICS:
It’s kind of hard for me to remember
Exactly how I felt back then
‘Cause what was fire is barely an ember now
It hasn’t yet become regret so Imma get this baby blazin' again
Heart skipped a beat the moment I met you
Our future flashed before my eyes
A quiet street, house, kids and a pet too
I knew the deal and I could feel to make it real I had to capitalise
'Cause I’m blind and you're fine
Do whatever that you please
But can’t you make some room for me
'Cause in time, you’ll find
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
We were fine, hey
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
Oh shit, look, now you’ve gone and got married
I don’t think that was in the script (Oh, no)
We shook the ground and then you just carried on
But your the best and I attest I’ll never rest until the tables are flipped
‘Cause I’m blind, hey, and you're fine, baby
Do whatever that you please
But can’t you make some room for me
'Cause in time, you will find out
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
We were fine, hey
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
We were fine, baby
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
In light of what’s occurred, I need to say (to say)
You might have just incurred a big mistake (mistake)
‘Cause now you've said your vows and still I live ten thousand miles away
Can we call it a day?
Wish sometimes I could have a wee glance at
What has been written in the stars
But what is life if you never take chances? Oh
So hear my voice, you’ve got a choice, so let’s rejoice and take a rocket to Mars
‘Cause I’m blind and you're fine
Do whatever that you please
But can’t you make some room for me
'Cause in time, you will find out
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
We were fine, hey
I was right and you were wrong
Don’t fight it all along we were fine
We were fine, hey
Doesn’t matter who was wrong
Relax ‘cause all along we were fine
